Saronic Gulf

Greece offers sailing for all levels of experience, the Greek Archipelago consists of thousands of islands, most of them uninhabited just waiting to be explored!  The gentle winds of the Ionian and Sporadic Gulf are perfectly suited to families and less experienced skippers with short distances between islands making for a relaxing sailing holiday. By way of contrast the more open seas and stronger winds found in the Cyclades will appeal to those wanting a more challenging experience.

If you are planning a one week charter we recommend focusing on a certain area as there is so much to be explored. If you wish to explore more of Greece we recommend two weeks of sailing – which enables you to visit several areas but also leaves time for relaxation and lingering in favourite spots.

Sailing in Greece is at its best from April to October. The high season stretches from June to the end of September but do consider visiting in early or late season when everywhere is quieter but the weather is still warm. In July and August temperatures can be high and the area is busier.

Greece’s popularity has a lot to do with the friendly atmosphere and hospitality of the Greek people. Having your “home” on a yacht in the harbour means that when you moor up at the end of the day you will be able to watch the world ‘watching you watching them’!

Take the opportunity to enjoy Greek specialities as souvlaki, mousakka and kleftiko. Another favourite is to order all the appetizers and share your meal with friends with dishes as tzatziki, melitzanasalata, taramasalata and saganaki.

When chartering a bare boat some companies offer a service phone for emergencies and technical assistance. Base staff are happy to assist, whether it may concern the yacht or deciding on a restaurant for the evening.

Charter your yacht from Athens from either Kalamaki or Lavrion and you will be well places to visit the breathtaking Temple of Poseidon perched high on the cliffs overlooking Sounion Bay.

Sitting at the mouth of the Saronic Gulf and the western edge of the Cyclades you have the choice of the sheltered Saronic or the more challenging but beautiful Cyclades.

Leaving your charter yacht at anchor in Sounion Bay, take the dinghy ashore before climbing the trail up the to the ruins of the  temple.

This is the perfect spot for a sunset view up towards the temple from your boat anchored at in the bay.
